CD73 CSA General Joe E. Johnston
CD73 CSA General Joe E. Johnston
This Virginia-born general graduated with the 1829 class from West Point and served for eight years with the Artillery against the Indians. He resigned to become a civil engineer, but re-joined the Army in 1838 as a topographical engineer. He resigned again in 1861 to accept a commission as brigadier general in the Confederate Army. He was wounded at Seven Pines and typically preferred to pursue a strategy of acting in retaliation rather than taking the offensive. This earned him Jefferson Davis’s displeasure. This image is a later depiction of the general in civilian garb , an upper bust view in a simulated oval frame. Condition is very fine.
