C172 - Civilian Letter of Inquiry

Written in Pittsboro, Mississippi 9 December 1861 to a Mr. R. D. Crowder, one J. W. Box inquires about the possibility of renting the house which his brother had been renting. "It was my brother that rented it from you this year he has not paid you I suppose he is in the army now and has been for some time." He wants to know "the least" Mr. Crowder would accept as rental payment. I find this to be a particularly interesting short letter, especially as it involves life at home, disrupted by a soldier's being called to duty.
