Foul weather inspired many different types of headgear for Union soldiers and officers. Some units issued kepis made entirely of oilcloth to their men. Others made do with oilcloth cover such as this one which was made to fit directly over the top of the McClellan-style kepi. We know that tailors cut kepis in differing heights and this cover, measuring 7" in diameter and 3_� high would fit one of the lower cut kepis. It is in used, but very good condition.
