According to Dr. Lord, regimental bands began to disappear during the winter of 1862, but the fife and drum corps remained and were enjoyed through the rest of the war. "There was no finer inspiration for the men at the front than the first burst, crash and roll of reveille, when a good fife and drum corps with melodious shrill fifes rallied upon the color line and roused an entire regiment." All period fifes had six small holes at one end, and one larger hole at the other. This one is the more common rosewood with nickel silver tips. It is manufacture marked to "Crosby" underneath which is the "C" logo. The markings are somewhat faint, but readable. Crosby was a well known manufacturer of Civil War fifes. This one is an excellent specimen measuring 17� in length.
