This is a .58 caliber, single-shot muzzleloader measuring 56" in length and weighing 9 lb 3 oz. It has a 40" round barrel secured by three barrel bands. All mountings are iron with the metal parts finished bright. The ramrod is original to the piece, made of steel with a tulip head. The front sight doubles as a lug for an angular bayonet. The lock is marked with an eagle between the letters "U" and "S" and the words "Amoskeag Mfg Co/Manchester NH" with 1863 behind the hammer. There is an inspector's "U" on each of the three barrel bands. Someone long ago carved a five point star in the stock. The is very neatly done and in no way detracts from the weapon's outstanding appearance. The walnut finish is extremely nice. There is a little bit of pitting between the hammer and the rear sight. Amoskeag modified their contracts to closely resemble the Colt Special Model 1861 contract rifle musket. This is especially evident in the shape of the hammer and the bolster. Amoskeag also produced the Lindner breechloading percussion rifles and carbines during the Civil War. This is a very fine and extremely desirable weapon.
