This is the standard size M1839 Infantry enlisted oval belt plate. It measures slightly larger than 3" x 2" and has a die-struck, rolled brass face. The back is lead filled with brass arrow hooks. It has a couple of pushes in the outer rim (probably from wear). About 80% of the lead fill remains. The face is about 60% bright with some darker patina on the "S" and around the oval. In all, a most representative and desirable plate. It most closely resembles plate 504 in O'Donnell & Campbell.
