L412 1st NY Officer's Letter to Pierson
Dated 3 February 1862, this letter was written by Captain Ebenezer Van Tuyl to Colonel J. Fred Pierson to acknowledge receipt of $10 to pay for medical inspection, and $75 for hotel lodging and transportation for 12 newly recruited men. He informs the Colonel that he plans to meet with Colonel Shepard in Elmira and return to the regiment on the 10th. He asks permission to say overnight in New York with the men in order to make some necessary purchases. This is a clearly penned letter, two pages in quarto and in very good condition ( a couple of small ink stains at the bottom). VanTuyl enlisted as a commissioned officer 15 December 1861. On 2 May 1863 he was both wounded at Chancellorsville and taken prisoner, but paroled 11 days later.
